How to Crochet the Mini Bean Stitch

The mini bean stitch, also known as the Elizabeth Stitch, is the main texture used in my Mistwood Sweater Scarf pattern, where it creates a soft, structured fabric with a beautiful drape. This stitch looks great on both sides, which makes it ideal for statement scarves, garments, and cozy accessories where texture plays a key role.

It is a smaller, more refined variation of classic bean or puff stitches. The result is a dense yet flexible fabric without the heavy bulk that larger textured stitches can create.

Materials

For the swatch shown here, I used Hobbii Portobello yarn and a 5 mm crochet hook (US H-8). You can easily adapt this stitch to other yarn weights, keeping in mind that smoother yarns highlight the stitch definition best.

Foundation

Start with a foundation chain made of an even number of chains, then add one extra chain for turning.

How the Mini Bean Stitch Is Made

Row 1

Insert your hook into the third chain from the hook. Yarn over and pull up a loop. Yarn over again, insert the hook into the same chain, and pull up another loop. You will have four loops on your hook.

Yarn over and pull through all four loops, then chain 1 to close the stitch.

Skip one chain and repeat this sequence across the row.

Row 2

Chain 1 and turn. Work the mini bean stitch into the side space of the stitches from the previous row, using the same steps as before. Continue across the row.

Repeat this row until you reach the desired length.

Tips for Best Results

Keep your tension relaxed when pulling up loops so the stitch stays easy to work into on the next row. If the fabric feels too stiff, try a slightly larger hook. For a tighter, more structured look, go down one hook size. This stitch is perfect for cozy projects that need texture without heaviness.
